The tourist hotspot of Iceland, with its famous Blue Lagoon hot spring and spa, nightlife, and natural wonders, has been among the worst-affected nations of the recent world financial crisis, with the value of its national currency dropping dramatically. In an effort to bail out the nation’s tourism industry, Icelandair is now offering round-trip fall and winter flights from Boston or New York to Reykjavik from just $399 for economy class, an estimated 30 to 50 percent off of what rates on the same route were going for just a few weeks ago.

In addition to these economy fares, the airline’s new Economy Plus class is on sale, with round-trip tickets from just $799. Economy Plus is designed for business and leisure travelers who enjoy amenities like extra leg room, more baggage allowance, and lounge access.

Just be sure to book by October 31, for travel between November 1, 2008 and March 31, 2009.

Bundle up. Although Iceland is nice (it’s Greenland that’s ice), the island gets cold in the winter – expect temperatures averaging about 31 degrees in January.
