Hotel Astoria is built on the site of the medieval town walls. Located in the historic Pest center, it became a hotel in 1914 and completed a massive renovation in 2006. The public spaces are decorated with big columns, carved moldings, and Art Nouveau stained glass. There are 234 rooms, the best of which are in the old building, not the 1960s wing. The décor is updated Old World style, with heavily patterned armchairs, bedspreads, carpets, and draperies. The Astoria Café Mirror, with its elaborate chandeliers, marble columns, and gold molding, is a throwback to Budapest’s old coffeehouses.
