Tel Aviv

For a city that is by no means enormous, the variety of nightlife in Tel Aviv can be head-spinning. For starters, it is very much a 24-hour city, and you’ll find that coffee shops can be busier at 2am than at 2pm. There are mega-clubs in the north and south of the city, but generally the action focuses on smaller clubs closer to the city center. And expect to get a late start: straight, gay or mixed, the action doesn’t really get going until two or even three in the morning. Cover charges, where they exist, are usually nominal. The best nights for clubbing are Thursday and Friday. There are few gay bars, but weekly gay parties take place regularly at a variety of venues.

Tel Aviv Nightlife

This formerly small dance club and lounge got a big new home when it moved to this east Tel Aviv industrial space in 2006. Look for weekly rotating DJs and themed party nights from funk to gay.

Tel Aviv’s thriving gay scene is mostly limited to mega-clubs and discos. Evita, however, is one of the city’s rare gay lounges, with a long, full bar, excellent range of cocktails and a terrace area in the front. Look for theme nights, such as Israeli Wednesdays and Eurovision Sundays.

A late-night supper club in the purist Middle Eastern tradition, Nanuchka is one part Central Asian pleasure palace, serving Georgian food, one part see-and-be-seen fashionista favorite. Nap in the afternoon, book a table for dinner and drinks, and prepare to stay all night. Dancing on the bar is de rigueur.

This open-air lounge is a great place to pass the time during warm summer evenings. Set on a pier in the Mediterranean, Shalvata serves an excellent selection of salads and grilled fish and meats along with its menu of fruity cocktails. A casual restaurant by day, the vibe shifts to dance bar by night.
