Expert Review
Island oases don’t get more luxurious than the private villas at Red Frog Beach. Located on the largely unpopulated Isla Bastimentos, a short boat ride away from the main island of Bocas Del Toro, this resort offers everything from rain forest to beaches. Each two- or three-bedroom villa sleeps 6-8 people comfortably, and features a private plunge pool, full kitchen, living room, outdoor patio, and full or partial Caribbean beach views. Extra touches like an iPod dock (in most villas), individually controlled air-conditioning units in every room, a washer/dryer (handy for cleaning sandy beach towels), free Wi-Fi, satellite TV, and a cell phone with a direct-line to on-call staff, make this resort feel extra special. Most villas are a 10-minute walk away from the beach, but it’s highly recommended to rent a golf cart to easily get around the resort. Stock up on groceries and essentials before grabbing a water taxi from the main island – shopping options are limited at the resort, and there are only two bars and restaurants at the resort (other restaurants on the island are only accessible by boat). Or, splurge and hire a private chef to cook in your private villa (prices vary). The lack of development on this island is a nice change from the hectic mainland, especially at night, when no light pollution allows for amazing stargazing. The resort emphasizes its eco-friendly nature, and so all the tap water is drinkable (eliminating the need for bottled water) and guests are charged for excessive electric charges, in an attempt to save resources. The resort will be undergoing on-site construction through 2012, and the activity center will not be completed until the end of August 2011. Activities are still bookable, although with a bit more advance planning required. The zipline canopy tour through the rainforest is a must-do, and you may even spot a red frog in the wild on the walk there. Day trips to nearby attractions like the National Marine Park and Starfish Beach are also bargain-priced and easy to customize.
