Getting There

BY PLANE
There are no direct flights from the US to Vietnam, Laos, or Cambodia. Major airlines that fly to the region, like Delta, American, and (United, usually connect in Hong Kong, Tokyo, Bangkok, Singapore, or Seoul to regional partners like Japan Airlines, Cathay Pacific, or Singapore Airlines. Including transfer times, you're looking at flight times of 18-20 hours, no matter which coast you fly from.

On a whirlwind two-week trip around Indochina, you will have to fly between the destinations covered in this itinerary. The good news is, all internal flights can all be booked on arrival in Vietnam; Vietnam Airlines has regular flights between most cities in the country and offers one-way tickets between Ho Chi Minh City and Danang (the gateway to Hoi An, easily accessible in under an hour by taxi); Danang and Hanoi; Hanoi and Vientiane; Vientiane and Phnom Penh; Phnom Penh and Siem Reap; and Siem Reap to Ho Chi Minh City. Lao Airlines provides round-trip service between Vientiane and Luang Prabang; Siem Reap Airways or President Airlines cover one-way flights from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap. Note that you'll have to pay hefty international departure taxes upon exiting each country ($14 for Vietnam, $10 for Laos and $25 for Cambodia).

For more information about each country, see the official tourist board websites for Vietnam; Laos; and Cambodia.

VACATION-PACKAGE PROVIDERS
The best upscale tour operators with US offices are the Australia-based Travel Indochina that offers a 19-day itinerary around the region, and the Colorado-based Asia TransPacific Journeys, with a 22-day Passage to Indochina package taking in the highlights of our suggested circuit plus some extras. More moderate tour operators with US offices include BA Tours; Geographic Expeditions; and Adventures Abroad. A great source of short trips is Circle of Asia.

The best Indochina-based operators are the Swiss-owned Diethelm Travel, who have a 15-day Grand Indochina tour and the French-owned Exotissimo, with a 14-day Indochina Heritage Road tour that skips Hanoi and Halong Bay but visits all the other destinations.

For local city tours: Vietnam Paradise Travel, offers the best-priced day tours in Saigon and Hanoi ($15–$16); Vietnam Tours offers the best lunch-inclusive tours of Hoi An, including a My Son and city combo ($43) or city and countryside fling ($31); the most reputable agencies for customized tours of Laos are Lane Xang Travel and Inter Lao Tourism. For day tours in both Phnom Penh and Siem Reap/Angkor, we highly recommend 5OceansCambodia and PTM Travel & Tours ($16–$43).
