Buenos Aires Nightlife

Witness Buenos Aires' nightlife and dancing and you'll see porteños in all of their dressed-up glory. Tango needn't be experienced in a club (you can see the dance performed on the streets of La Boca or San Telmo for free), but dance halls like Confitería Ideal (Suipacha 380; 011-54-11-5265-8069; www.confiteriaideal.com) exhibit the traditional dance in its purest form (this hall also offers daily classes), with milongeros (tango dancers) sweeping across its almost century-old floors. You can even hire a professional dance partner called a taxi dancer (from $20/hour; www.thetangodancers.com.ar) to accompany you to milongas (tango halls). But our favorite bar remains Recoleta's rambling three-level Milión (Paraná 1048; 011-54-11-4815-9925; www.milion.com.ar), a restored French-style mansion with secretive courtyards, several bars, and a candlelit marble staircase that brings out the inner Evita in all who descend it. Joining its fashion-forward crowd while sipping on Fernet Branca and Coke (Buenos Aires' trademark cocktail) is a great way to round out your experience.
