Ipanema Beach in Rio de Janeiro
Getting There
The best way to reach the three destinations covered in this story is with a multi-city ticket that covers your flight to Rio, a connecting flight to Buenos Aires, and a flight back to the U.S. from Buenos Aires. Then add a return ticket to Iguazú from Buenos Aires on a local carrier. When we researched November dates, a multi-city trip started at $960 from Miami; $1456 from LA; $1605 from Chicago; and $1312 from New York (taxes included). Flights to Iguazú on LAN (www.lan.com) came in at $204 round-trip. There are limited direct flights to Rio; most connect via Sao Paulo. United (www.united.com), American (www.aa.com), Delta (www.delta.com), and Continental (www.continental.com) provide the most direct routes; count on at least 12 hours from New York and Chicago; 14 from Los Angeles; and 10 from Miami, including layovers. Flights back from Buenos Aires also typically connect in Sao Paulo; factor on 14 hours to New York and Chicago; 18 to Los Angeles; and 11 to Miami, with layovers. The flight to Iguazú is just under two hours; Rio to Buenos Aires is just over three hours.
