Lisbon’s grandest hotel was built in 1870 on a hilltop as a palace for the count of Valença. In 1998, it was taken over by the Orient Express hotel group and given an extensive modernization, which included building the new Garden Wing where most guest rooms are located. The 109 rooms are decorated with French and English furniture, and have impressive marble bathrooms and balconies that overlook the city, the River Tagus, and the hotel’s extensive gardens. The public spaces are beautiful, with frescoes and detailed marble floors. The hotel has indoor and outdoor pools, steam/sauna facilities, a gym, and a business center. Lapa Palace is located in a residential neighborhood of embassies and stately homes, but is very close to the city center.
