2007-04-23
NEW YORK - Everybody knows about the great food to be had in places like Paris, Hong Kong, Italy and New York.
But the spring issue of Sherman's Travel magazine has a top 10 list of "new foodie destinations," written by food writer Florence Fabricant, that contains a few surprises. The 10 destinations are:
-San Juan, Puerto Rico, for Nuevo Latino cuisine at restaurants like Delirio, Dragonfly and Aguaviva.
-Museums in New York City, like the pricey Danny Meyer restaurant at the Museum of Modern Art, called The Modern, and the Cafe Sabarsky in the Neue Galerie.
-Tunis, Tunisia, with fine versions of traditional cuisine like couscous and lamb at Dar el Jeld and Le Carthage.
-Berlin, where Restaurant Maxwell offers modern German cooking with dishes like trout in brown butter, and rare duck breast with cabbage.
-Florida, for New York style at Cafe Boulud in Palm Beach at the Brazilian Court hotel, and "Floribbean" touches like Key Lime aioli with calamari at 32 East in Delray Beach.
-Edinburgh, with fresh seafood at Fisher's Bistro, and the menus of the Michelin-starred chef Martin Wishart at the restaurant that bears his name in Leith.
-Athens, where familiar Greek food has been reinvented and updated at places like 48, Varoulko and Milos.
-North Fork, Long Island, N.Y., where the good food now matches the quality of the locally produced wines, at the North Fork Table and Inn, Scrimshaw, the Frisky Oyster, and the Jedediah Hawkins Inn.
-Istanbul, for traditional Turkish dishes at Balikci Sabahattin, Develi, Pandeli, and Korfez.
-Mexico City, for rustic cooking at Fonda el Refugio in the Zona Rosa; simple fare at Cafe de Tacuba near the Zocala, and the menus of chef Patricia Quintana at Izote in the Polanco district.
