Though possessing a modest 156 rooms, Vieques' largest resort, Martineau Bay, got off to a bumpy start, closed in August 2007, and reopened in spring 2010 as the W Retreat & Spa, Vieques Island. This marks the urban brand's inaugural Caribbean foray. Impressive touches include Alain Ducasse's first Caribbean restaurant, miX on the Beach, a major culinary coup for the W. Set on two private beaches, the hotel also features boldly designed rooms (most with ocean views), a glitzy infinity pool, an outdoor fire pit, and an oceanfront spa.
