Doha, Qatar Skyline

Doha, a burgeoning city with a glittering skyline, barely existed 30 years ago. Today, with oil money fueling eye-popping expansion in Qatar and in the entire Gulf region, this desert destination is inching its way onto more and more American travelers’ bucket lists. Most will get there via affordable, luxurious-even-in-coach flights on Qatar Airways, but the airline's specialty is its lavish business class, which gives its Gulf-region competitors -- Etihad and Emirates -- a run for their (endless) money. Once considered the more conservative younger sibling of Dubai and Abu Dhabi, Doha is coming into its own with world-class sporting events (the 2022 World Cup), high-end restaurants (Nobu), and a spectacular national museum, which is set to open in 2016.

Why Go

Many will layover here on their way to other places in Asia, or even Africa, but the destination offers plenty of its own charms, including desert safaris over the dunes, a souk that bustles with locals at nighttime, and the unbeatable Museum of Islamic Art.
