Maui can be accessed directly from select cities on the mainland, or via connecting flights from Honolulu. Its main airport, Kahului Airport, is serviced with direct flights from the contiguous US by United (www.united.com), Delta (www.delta.com), American (www.aa.com), ATA (www.ata.com), US Airways (www.usairways.com), Continental (www.continental.com), Northwest (www.nwa.com), Aloha Airlines (www.alohaairlines.com), and Hawaiian Airlines (www.hawaiianair.com). Factor in flight time of about 5.5 hours from Los Angeles, 10 hours from Chicago (with layover), and 12 hours (with layover) from New York.

Getting Around Maui
Maui is divided into five regions, Central, South, East, West, and Upcountry. With limited public transport and long distances to cover, nearly every visitor rents a car from the main airport in Kahului to explore the island. Rates are reasonable – about $45 a day for a mid-size car, $60 for a full-size, and $75 for an SUV, and gas prices range between $3.40 and $3.70 per gallon – but be sure to book ahead, since cars often sell out. The central highways 311 and 30 – which go from Kahului to Kihei, and Waikapu to Kahakuloa, respectively – can be especially choked during rush hours, so plan your travel during off-peak hours.
