Hotels
There once was a time when the ultra-cheap hotel room existed in Rome but, as far as today's travelers are concerned, those days might as well have been swept away when the Goths and Vandals invaded the city centuries earlier. That said, there are many, many hotels in the Italian capital and most offer agreeable rooms.
For those who like to splurge, luxury accommodations are on par with the best in the world. The Hassler Villa Medici (Piazza Trinita dei Monti 6; 06/699-340; www.hotelhasslerroma.com), for example, looks down from its position near the Spanish Steps as if it were something to be reckoned with; expect first-rate amenities like limousine airport service, high-speed internet access, in-room DVD player, satellite TV, and state-of-the-art gym, to name a few. The lobby of the ivy-clad Raphael (Largo Febo 2; 06/682-831; www.raphaelhotel.com), near Piazza Navona, is decked out in Picasso-created ceramics; the rooms (some on a floor designed by Richard Meier) are just as lavishly appointed, complete with satellite TV and all the other perks you would expect from luxe lodging, even terraces in some cases. You don't have to be an art lover to love the Hotel Art (Via Margutta 56; 06/328-711; www.hotelart.it), especially once you set your eyes on the cozy rooms, outfitted with thick duvets, ambient backlighting on the walls, and plenty of amenities.
Can't afford a cream-of-the-crop room to rest your cobble-weary feet? Have no fear, for the Eternal City is loaded with pleasant moderately-priced hotels. Housed in a former monastery, the Residenza Farnese (Via del Mascherone 59; 06/6821-0980; www.residenzafarneseroma.it) offers country-meets-modern rooms – wrought-iron beds and wood furnishings, satellite TV, and internet access – with views of the nearby Farnese Palace. Located just across the Tiber, in charming Trastevere, the Hotel Santa Maria (Vicolo del Piede 2; 06/589-4626; www.htlsantamaria.com), a cloister-cum-hotel, offers simply furnished ground-level rooms around a leafy courtyard. The Hotel Nerva's (Via Tor de' Conti 3; 06/678-1835; www.hotelnerva.com) amenities and friendly service are enough to keep the guests coming back, but the location (a marble stone's throw away from the Forum) is the real benefit of staying here.
For travelers on the budget, few places can beat The Beehive (Via Marghera 8; 06/4470-4553; www.the-beehive.com), which has a youthful vibe but a boutique look; internet access and yoga classes are big plus, as is the free guide to Rome the American owners hand out to all guests. The Hotel Tempio di Pallade (Via G. Giolitti 425; 06/7045-1521; hoteltempiodipallade.com), located in the up-and-coming Esquilino neighborhood next to Termini railway station, has 45 clean and comfortable rooms.
