With its grid-like structure and spectacular skyline of shimmering skyscrapers, Abu Dhabi would be the Manhattan of the Middle East if it weren’t so laidback. While high-rise blocks line the main arteries, the backstreets, which give the city its easygoing feel, consist of low-rise apartments and big family villas.

Hamdan Street
Abu Dhabi’s commercial artery bustles with shoppers at night. The main thoroughfare is lined with high-rise apartment blocks, shops and supermarkets, backstreets are filled with hole-in-the-wall bakeries, tailors, and mosques.
Tourist Club
The Tourist Club area is better known for chic Abu Dhabi Mall and the swish Beach Rotana and Meridien hotels than the expat club that once dominated this neighborhood.
The Corniche
Stretching along The Corniche – a stunning waterfront of pavements, bike paths and parks busy with walkers, joggers, rollerbladers, and picnicking families – are some of the city’s swankiest skyscrapers.
Khalidiya
This livable expat neighborhood of residential apartment blocks, carpet shops, and Arabic sweet shops, is home to some of Abu Dhabi’s most interesting cafés, sheesha spots, and eateries.
Al Bateen
The ramshackle boat-building yard in this area is about to be remade into a new marina development. In the meantime, the enormous embassies and colossal Sheikhs’ palaces here are the main draw.
The Breakwater
This peninsula of land reclaimed from the gulf has stunning views of Abu Dhabi’s Manhattan-like skyline, the world’s tallest flag-pole, the charming Heritage Village, glam Marina Mall, and a marina.
