Sherman's Expert Review

A classy ambience (although somewhat faded since its glamorous halcyon days) still holds at the boutique-size Villa Vera. Upscale lodgings, including substantial villas, are surrounded by a fine spa, over one dozen pools, and tennis courts. These private digs once hosted stars like Elizabeth Taylor, more Lana Turner, and Richard and Pat Nixon. Renovations have upped the exceptionality of the hotel (without loosing its charms), making it an affordable and upscale retreat ideal for travelers seeking a bit of solace and privacy. The world-class spa offers sumptuous services and Condesa Beach is only a few uphill blocks away. All 69 units and villas are spread out along the hillside (if you're not up for the steep climb, this resort is not your best bet) and are doused in subtle warm shades; some feature terraces with views of the bay. Villas like the Lana Turner Villa (where the star lived for 5 years) have their own private pools, outdoor bars, and jacuzzi tubs.
