Sherman's Expert Review

Ischia may not be as internationally synonymous with old-school glamour as neighboring Capri, but it's been quietly attracting its own star-studded clientele for decades, thanks in large part to legendary Italian publisher and film producer Angelo Rizzoli, who founded this hotel and thermal spa complexmore in the 1950s. Golden Age celebs like Elizabeth Taylor, Maria Callas and Charlie Chaplin - as well as current stars attending the Ischia Film Festival - have frequented the family-owned property, which is set on a private beach in the village of Lacco Ameno, a short drive from the main port. Spread out over several inter-connected buildings, the 128 rooms and 27 suites (available in 10 categories) are comfortable and stylishly Mediterranean mod, with bright Capodimonte ceramic and hand-painted majolica tiles, Murano glass fixtures, oversized beauty products, and contemporary art and furnishings. Most have balconies or terraces and bay, gulf or garden views. Royal Suites, the newest addition, boast sitting areas, outdoor hydro-massage pools and showers dispensing both spring and sea water. The vast spa complex is clinical in vibe, with sparse decoration and emphasis on doctor-prescribed programs, but the facilities themselves are cutting edge, ranging from thermal mud tubs and high-tech laser cellulite treatments to several pools, one of which is for color/music therapy. In keeping with the retro-glam feel, the several bars and restaurants - which emphasize fresh ingredients and classic Italian recipes - are manned by white-jacketed staffers, most of whom who have attended to generations of returning guests.

How it Works
#10 of 10 hotels in Amalfi Coast

Close to everything—set back a little from the main road and a few minutes up from the main beach—this sunny Mediterranean-style hillside hostelry commands expansive views of the deep blue, and of local color, too. The lobby has a sprinkle of... more
