American Southwest Tips

Mind your camera
Respect is key when photographing Native American sites such as the Taos Pueblo and the Acoma Pueblo. After all, this is their home. Expect to have to pay a camera fee at the gate if you want to take snapshots and always ask first if you would like to take someone’s picture.
Drink up
Stay hydrated and carry plenty of water around with you at all times, including in your rental car. The sun can get extremely hot and it’s wise to be ready in case of emergencies.
Protect yourself
Year-round, hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen are a must while under the Southwestern sun.
Changes in altitude
In the Southwest, you may find yourself changing elevation rapidly as you tour from one site to the next. The thin air in higher altitudes such as Bryce Canyon (elevation: 8,000 feet at the rim), may require some acclimatization. Remember to drink lots of water and slow down if you feel dizzy.
Buy a National Park Pass
If you plan to visit more than three national parks and/or monuments, this pass will be a lifesaver. Purchase one of the different pass options offered by the National Park Service to save time and money on a driving trip around the Southwest. www.nps.gov/fees_passes.htm
Car Rental
Renting a car is essential in the Southwest, especially if you plan on visiting the national parks. All the usual car rental companies such as Alamo, Enterprise, and Thrifty can be found at the airports. Alternatively, travel around in style in one of the vintage convertibles offered by Phoenix Airport’s Beverly Hills Rent-A-Car (www.bhrentacar.com).
Watch the gas gauge
On some Southwestern highways there can be a considerable distance between towns with filling stations. Check your map before you set out and keep your eye on the gas gauge to ensure that you don’t end up stranded.
Temperature Changes
Subject to a typical desert climate, daytime and nighttime temperatures in the higher elevations of the Southwest can vary drastically. Always pack a jacket, even in the summer.
Watch the skies
If you’re hiking, stay mindful of the skies, as summer thunderstorms can approach quickly and can cause dangerous flash floods.
