American Southwest When To Go

Summers in the Southwest are hot and it’s not uncommon for temperatures to push the mercury into the 100s. Destinations with higher elevations, like Taos and Bryce Canyon, are more moderate, with temperatures in the 70s and 80s. This is also the time when tour buses and mobs of visitors crowd the parks and points of interest across the region.

In the higher elevations, snowfall and cooler temperatures keep visitors away and make transportation difficult. Some parks and attractions, parts of the Grand Canyon included, may be closed for the season. The exceptions are Taos, where fluffy, dry snow draws skiers, and in Phoenix and Scottsdale where sunny, comfortable weather spells high season at the golf courses and spas.

Phoenix is a warm 80 degrees around this time of year, temperatures in the mountains are cool, and some snowfall may occur at upper elevations such as Bryce Canyon, Moab, and Taos. The caravans of crowds usually stay away from major destinations during this time of year, causing rates to drop dramatically. Added bonus: The sagging autumn sun adds extra depth to the rock’s brilliant red and orange hues.
