In just a few short years, Siem Reap has transitioned from a sleepy research station to a festive town with a party that lasts all night, all year long. A diverse selection of clubs, cafés, and bars are scattered throughout the city, but the eponymous “Bar Street” in the old market … more is always a sure bet for a hopping good time. Smart visitors retreat from the park in the hot afternoon and take a daytime disco nap before heading off into the cooler night.

Book at least two weeks in advance for this cultural show and Khmer dinner buffet. Yes, it’s all done for the tourists, but the traditional Apsara dancers put on a show that’s not to be missed. In that spirit, tour groups and families are seated in this 1,200-seat indoor restaurant – Cambodia’s first real dinner theater – and entertained.

La Noria serves great French and Khmer cuisine, but the real draw is the traditional shadow puppet and dance shows performed by local children every Sunday and Wednesday night at 7:30pm. Similar shows abound, but none as established and high-quality as this production.

Siem Reap’s number one nightspot is more than a hilarious pun – it’s also a wonderfully laidback bar that’s outgrown its backpacker beginnings and matured into something far more substantial. The tourist/resident divide ends here, making it the best place to meet locals on their terms. What’s more, a percentage of the proceeds from your cold Asian beer help fund the local hospital.

This easy-going bar attracts all ages and styles with good music, cheap drinks, and the game of pool. Sign up for a round or just watch. “Laundry” is a must stop on the Siem Reap bar hop, especially if you make it before happy hour ends at 9pm.

This loud and slightly obnoxious British pub attracts a colorful crowd of locals who come for raucous drinking and the weekly charity pub quiz, which raises money for local children’s education and health care. Burgers, fries, and other bar food abound, but the Sunday roast dinner is legendary. If you’re feeling a little crazy, come and get it.

A favorite among writers, artists, and intellectuals, Ivy Bar serves yummy, pub-style Khmer and European food along with a terrific list of cocktails, wine, and beer. Its quiet ambience makes it the perfect place for good conversation and meeting up with friends.

Linga is making a name for itself with great design, a cool and unaffected aesthetic, and killer cocktails (Mango martinis, anyone?) Well-chosen music, frequent theme parties, and real characters promise a far more interesting evening than you’ll find anywhere else off Bar Street.
