This sprawling, Georgian metropolis is seeped in history and southern charm (and yes – that is a giant peach you see in the skyline; it’s the work of a proud resident who designed his water tower to resemble the state fruit). Visit Martin Luther King, Jr.’s childhood home, take in the more “Louvre Atlanta” at the High Museum of Art, and try some of Atlanta’s famous soul food (at Son’s restaurant the peaches in their cobbler come straight from the yard)! Here, the expert editors at Sherman’s Travel guide to you to the sweetest of the sweet.

Smart Splurge    Great Value
The city’s ritzy Buckhead neighborhood has been enjoying a massive renaissance of late, with the Mansion on Peachtree at the core of this revitalization. The 127-room boutique property oozes refined luxury, with guestrooms touting classy touches like marbled bathrooms (complete with deep-soaking tubs) and fresh-cut flowers on display (bouquets are delivered daily). Personal attention is at a premium, with expertly trained butlers on hand to answer to guests’ every whim. Toast your trip with a cocktail while overlooking the garden terrace at the cozy library bar (Mansion Bar), and retreat for the night to savor the skyline views from your room – they’re yet another gem to be discovered at this 42-story stunner.

The property was renovated in 2001, but retains much of its historical feel, although some of the rooms could stand another update. Many of the 317 antique-furnished rooms have balconies that overlook the street, and suites include home-like amenities such as full sized refrigerators and washer/dryers. The hotel has one of the best locations in town, convenient to Midtown, Downtown and many of Atlanta’s best tourist attractions including the Fabulous Fox Theater, the Georgia Aquarium, and the World of Coke.
