Atlanta Great Values

Great Values

Great values abound in Atlanta, where working-class roots meld with big city panache. Score great bargains and avoid the sweltering heat of summer by hitting the city in the fall or early spring, when the crowds thin. All year long, however, you’ll get the most for your money at these inexpensive, yet unforgettable, attractions, restaurants, hotels, and shops.

Smart Splurge    Great Value
Part of the InterContinental chain’s dip into the chic boutique-style hotel market, it’s hard to beat Indigo for European style, prime location (on Peachtree Street), and terrific value for the money. The 140 guest rooms (114 are non-smoking) feature airy décor, bold colors, and wood floors; free wireless Internet access is available in the lobby. The Indigo is steps away from the Fox Theatre and a slew of restaurants, but the hotel bar (The Golden Bean) is an inviting spot in to grab a cocktail its own right.

If you’re looking for personality without the hefty price tag, this funky inn, with its hipster scene and resident kitty, is for you. Located in an old stone building, the 80 rooms are clean and basic (make sure to see your room before checking in – some are shabbier than others), but the real draw is the spectacular location near the shops, clubs, restaurants, and galleries of trendy Poncey Highlands. There’s even a hip, onsite club – the Ballroom Lounge – that comes complete with disco ball and live music Tuesday through Saturday. You won’t find another value as good this close to downtown.

Soul Food Museum
This storefront establishment is less a museum than a cultural oddity, but it’s worth a visit to see Dr. Kenneth Willhoite’s collection of foods made or marketed by black Americans. Willhoite leads a 45-minute tour of the collection, which includes everything from an antique icebox to Aunt Jemima pancake mix to Crunk! energy drink. No reservations necessary.
