Atlanta: Neighborhoods

While Atlanta may be one of the most sprawling cities in the country, the inner neighborhoods are as charming and vibrant as any Southern town and are where most travelers spend the majority of their time. Especially since the 1996 Olympics, the areas surrounding downtown have experienced a renaissance, and the stately old houses and leafy streets are now brimming with restaurants and shops.

Downtown Dive headlong into Atlanta’s revitalized Downtown, where you’ll find the Georgia Aquarium, CNN Center, and the New World of Coke attraction.

Midtown Strong on culture, clubs, restaurants, and shopping, Midtown is also the home of beautiful Piedmont Park and the Atlanta Botanical Garden, and serves as the city’s de facto gay neighborhood.

Buckhead Sometimes called “the Beverly Hills of the East,” Buckhead’s the place for grand homes, upscale shopping, and divine dining.

Sweet Auburn As the hub of African-American nightlife in segregated times, Auburn Avenue was hailed as “the richest black street in America;” it’s now home to the wonderful Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site.

Little Five Points Step into Southern-style Bohemia in this established, eclectic enclave known for its progressive arts community and offbeat shopping options.

Castleberry Hill Once the exclusive domain of long-abandoned factories, this Downtown neighbor is now an exciting and booming arts-driven mini-community dotted with hip and friendly galleries, shops, eateries, and bars.

Grant Park This upscale neighborhood surrounds the historic park of the same name, and is home to some of the state’s most beautiful late 19th and early 20th century houses. Redesigned by Frederick Law Olmstead in 1903, the park, which officially dates to 1882, is the oldest city park in Atlanta. It’s also the site of Zoo Atlanta, and the huge civil war painting Cyclorama.
