Late summer (late-January to March in the Southern Hemisphere) brings the best of the sun and less crowds (with the kids back in school). Early summer (December and early January) is often wet and crowded. Auckland is a ghost town between Christmas and New Year’s.
Off Season: May to September
May usually offers plenty of crisp, clear days. June and July are the coldest and wettest months, and visitor numbers drop off considerably.
Sweet Spot: April; October
You won't be swimming in the ocean in either of these months, but they are generally pleasant times to visit. Temperatures are moderate and you're likely to strike some showery days, but the sun is bound to make an appearance.
