Austin Live Music

Live Music

Austin hosts two celebrated annual music festivals: South by Southwest in March and Austin City Limits in September. But you don’t have to attend one of these famous festivals to get your fill of live music. With performances taking place everywhere from the Austin-Bergstrom Airport to the Central more Market grocery store – and every night among nearly 200 live music venues – Austin certainly lives up to its moniker as the “Live Music Capital of the World.” Sixth Street is an ideal starting point to explore Austin’s live music scene, so pick up a copy of The Austin Chronicle and keep your eyes and ears open. Though some shows are free, keep in mind that most require a cover charge of around $10.

Saxon Pub
Cruising down the busy commercial strip of South Lamar Boulevard, the Saxon Pub is hard to miss owing to the colossal knight that stands sentinel in the parking lot. During the day this bar serves as a local watering hole, with the customary pool table and a robust selection of draft beers; but by night it transforms into one of this city’s most popular live music destinations. Crowds pack in to hear first rate live blues, rock, and country acts seven nights a week (past performers include Bonnie Raitt and Willie Nelson).

Antone’s
If the plan is to sit down for an evening of live music with a mellow vibe, don’t go to Antone’s. This venerated Austin music venue hosts big-name blues performers that attract standing-room-only crowds. Though it’s now located on 5th and Lavaca Streets, Antone’s was one of the first live music venues to open on 6th Street and was instrumental in putting Austin’s live music scene on the map. Muddy Waters, B.B. King, and Stevie Ray Vaughan are among the blues legends that have taken the stage here since its doors opened in 1975.
