Australia Getting There

Airports
Australia is rife with airports. The following are the major hubs for international travelers: Sydney Kingsford-Smith Airport (SYD), Tullamarine Airport (MEL) in Melbourne, Cairns International Airport (CNS), Brisbane International Airport (BNE), Coolangatta/Gold Coast International Airport (OOL), and Adelaide Airport (ADL). There are also smaller, domestic airports located throughout the country, including in the Whitsundays and on Kangaroo Island.
Airlines
Qantas Airways is Australia’s major international airline, but a large number of other companies service the country as well, including: Air New Zealand, United Airlines, Delta, US Airways, Cathay Pacific, and Singapore Airlines. Domestic carriers include Qantas, Virgin Blue, and Jetstar.
Flight Times
Regardless of your final destination in Australia, you are looking at one long flight. From Los Angeles plan on being in transit anywhere between 14-24 hours; from New York you’ll be traveling between 26-28 hours. Although there are direct flights from LA to Sydney, most flights do have at least one layover.
