The Bahamas ranks as one of the most popular destinations in the Caribbean, thanks to its proximity to Florida and the large number of package deals that make it easy to escape here on a budget. When it comes to a tropical getaway, all the regular suspects figure highly – sunbathing, fishing, more diving, and seafood. While it’s easy to pursue any of these activities, it’s a bit more challenging to identify the best of the best, and that’s where we come in. Our expert editors have compiled a list of the establishments, tour operators, restaurants, and hotels that deliver the type of top-notch experiences that make this string of Caribbean islands so worthwhile.

Smart Splurge    Great Value
The 26 relaxed, island-style bungalows at The Cove are set on 27 acres fronting the most breathtaking pink sand beach in the Bahamas, just a couple of miles northwest of Gregorytown. Each of the rooms and suites is adorned with iPods, beds with 600 thread-count sheets, tile floors, and spacious living areas just steps from the surf. Walk up to their hilltop pool for superb views of Eleuthera. For the price, the Cove borders on peerless.

It may be expensive, but it’s the most luxurious of all of Sandals resorts and one of the most comfortable properties in the Caribbean – an estimated $20 million was pumped into restoring this property on the site of a hotel built in the ‘40s. The all-inclusive nightly rate affords access to the massive complex’s seven sprawling pools (a few of which include man-made waterfalls), eight restaurants, full scale spa, extravagant gardens, and even a private off-shore island reached by ferry or kayak. Personal butlers attend to guests in the top villas and suites.

This stylish boutique hotel is owned by India Hicks, who is the daughter of British designer David Hicks, part English royalty, a former fashion model, and – if you’re not impressed yet – she was also one of Princess Diana’s bridesmaids. Overlooking Dumore Town’s harbor, the circa 1800 house has been restored with hardwood floors covered in seagrass mats, a new pool, and a gourmet international restaurant. The seven airy rooms (request one with a view of the harbor) have mahogany four poster beds and Ralph Lauren linens.

Of all the local resorts, none puts you more in Nassau than this one. Its prime location, straddling both downtown and the beach, and rich history (it was built on Fort Nassau in 1922, before the area became touristy) are just two reasons to stay here.
