Barbados: Cities and Regions

Although Barbados is officially divided into 11 parishes, it can be roughly broken down into four main sections. Though most tourist development is concentrated along the calmer south and west coasts, the Atlantic side also offers dramatic scenery and sightseeing.

St. James Parish This western parish’s glorious shoreline is nicknamed The Platinum Coast for its high-priced, high-class beach, spa, and golf resorts. Here, the most in-demand rooms are practically deeded.

Bridgetown The bustling, sophisticated capital offers colonial architecture, superior shopping, the superb Careenage harbor and, around Bay Street and Baxter’s Road, nightlife.

South Coast The liveliest part of Barbados teems with smaller resorts, condos, simple guesthouses, affordable eateries, and nightclubs attracting a younger crowd. Families come for the reef-protected waters.

East Coast The rugged Atlantic side is worth visiting for its spectacular rock formations, deserted beaches, gardens, caves, tiny cliffside villages, and distinctive, smaller hotels.
