Barbados Local Tips

Rent a car
Although public transportation will get you around, the best way to explore the island is by car. Just be aware the slow speed limits are enforced and driving is on the left.
Take the bus
Looking to save money? Use the efficient, comprehensive network of public and private buses and mini-vans. The busiest routes are Highways 1 and 7, with buses passing every 20 minutes; stops are clearly marked, but you can usually flag them down anywhere.
Money matters
The official currency is the Barbados dollar; the exchange rate is roughly 2 to the U.S. dollar, but the latter – as well as credit cards – are accepted everywhere.
Party down
Try to schedule your trip to coincide with one of the many events held throughout the year, including the Jazz Festival (January), Holetown Festival (a week of music, dancing and food in February), and Crop Over (the month-long summer Bajan Carnival).
Tour discounts
Take one of the themed tours (Homes & Gardens, Arts & Crafts, Black Culture) run by the Tourism Authority and National Trust. Before you go, pick up The free Barbados National Trust Heritage Passport for half-price admission.
