Barcelona Great Values

Great Values

Some of the best things in life can be, if not free, at least surprisingly affordable. The following Barcelona hotels and restaurants may not scratch the upper-most crust of Catalan society, but they all cater to sophisticated travelers looking for unique four-star options that won't break the bank.

Smart Splurge    Great Value
Book a room facing the pool and verdant patio of this well-located hotel, central to shops, restaurants, and the Gaudí buildings, where airy simple units come outfitted with colorful accents. African art graces the lobby walls and perks include WiFi internet access, a Mercedes Smart courtesy car, and free entry to Barcelona Egyptian Museum. The latest addition is the Balmes Residence, attached to the hotel by an interior garden and the shared services. The suites and apartments here come equipped with kitchens and living/dining rooms.

An array of three-star perks and an unbeatable location a stone’s throw from La Rambla makes up for the fact Barcelona’s oldest hotel, inside the former Convent of Saint Augustine from 1720, sits on a slightly shady square. The 75 rooms here come complete with the usual spectrum of amenities such as air-conditioning, telephone, TV, safe, and a well-equipped bathroom. Many of the units feature original detail like wood beams and stone walls. The more expensive attic suites offer great views of the area and a cozy atmosphere. The computer terminal is free for guests’ use.

Located in the trendy yet still inexpensive El Born neighborhood, this hotel has all the standard boutique design elements: fl oor-to-ceiling sheer curtains, minimalist four-poster bed frames, and plush velvet armchairs. Familiar? Yes, but still stylish and comfortable. The 43 rooms in the main building tend to be a bit small; to really stretch out, book one of the nearby suites (some are duplexes, where the upper fl oor can turn into an additional bedroom) with massive windows overlooking an interior patio.

Located in the burgeoning Sant Antoni neighborhood, the Market Hotel is run by the hotel group behind Hotel Omm. Rooms are large and a study in contrasts: Stark white walls, linens, and floor-to-ceiling curtains; dark wood fixtures and bed frames; and lacquered Oriental furniture beautify units. Bathrooms are more old-fashioned with raised stone basins and wood counters. Most junior suites come with balconies. The single apartment is twice the size of a standard room and has a kitchen, which is handy for those who want to explore and shop the nearby market. Otherwise, the hotel’s restaurant is well priced and well regarded by locals.
