Barcelona Local Tips

Language
Due to Barcelona’s popularity with tourists, you can get around speaking only English. Most locals will be happy to communicate in Spanish but if you want to impress, pack a Catalan phrasebook.
Mind your bags
La Rambla is rife with pickpockets; if anything should get snatched, stop by the tourist police at Rambla 43 or call 011-34-93-301-9060.
Cabbing it in Barcelona
A green light at the top of the taxicab means the car is available.
Siesta time
While many stores stay open all day during the week and on Saturday mornings, small independent shops traditionally close for siesta between 2pm-5pm.
Big lunch late dinner
Dinner in Spain is served late – the earliest you can expect to eat the day’s final meal is 9pm, so do like the locals do and have an abundant lunch.
Bike rental & tours
Barcelona is bike-friendly so rent your wheels from Classic Bikes (www.barcelonarentbikes.com) or Bike Rental Barcelona (www.bikerentalbarcelona.com); alternatively, join a bike tour offered by Biciclot (www.biciclot.net) or Scenic (www.scenicbcn.com).
Chowing down on Catalan cuisine
Due to the burgeoning gourmet movement of Catalan cuisine, Barcelona is a popular foodie destination. Options range from haute five-star dining to creative tapas-style meals. Arguably the most Catalan of all dishes is pa amb tomàquet, white bread rubbed with tomato pulp and olive oil.
