Bavaria When To Go

Peak Season: June to mid-October
For those who want to explore the natural beauty of Bavaria, a summer visit is best as it allows for the most time outdoors. High prices continue into September and October, when over six-million revelers pack the area’s beer gardens and hotels for Oktoberfest.
Off Season: December to mid-April
Though the Christmas markets are charming, ice and snow make for tricky driving on the Autobahn and less opportunities to hike through the countryside.
Sweet Spot: mid-October to November; mid-April to May
After the Oktoberfest hedonists depart, Bavaria settles back into its historic roots and prepares for the holidays. Hotel prices drop and availability rises. The temperatures are not yet prohibitively cold, so a morning hike or evening walk can still be fun. Early spring can offer the unique opportunity of experiencing the snow melt from the foothills of the Alps. Be sure to pick up a traditional boiled wool jacket to stay warm during brisk sunny afternoon.
