Boutique hotels in Beijing are like London buses: you wait an eternity for the first, then several arrive at once. For design-savvy visitors to China's capital, Hotel G is the latest member of a burgeoning hip hotel portfolio. Inspired by 1960s retro chic, Hotel G is dressed in dark, sultry tones, with plum, purple, and black predominating. Taiwan-based English designer Mark Lintott adds aesthetic enlightenment through clever use of red-, copper-, and green-tinted glass, and slick styling with mirrors, silver paint and fabrics, and crystal chandeliers. The 110 rooms are divided into four categories – Good, Great, Greater and Greatest – and range from 45 to 80 square meters. Each is equipped with iPod dock, plasma TV, velvet armchairs, and white enamel-tiled bathrooms with L'Occitaine shower products. Our favorite is the Greatest, which features a mirror-paneled ceiling above the bed, hand-painted raw cement walls, plum-colored sofa and thick pile carpet. It whispers "celeb pad" in a deeply seductive, gently theatrical tone. Hotel G is the sibling property to LA's Hotel Roosevelt, and the 25 Degrees gourmet burger bar has hopped the Pacific to join its new Beijing brother. The space is beautifully styled as a 21st-century update of a classic American diner, with a stone-tiled floor, long mirrored counter top, scarlet-tinted glass, brown leather chairs, silver ceiling, and spherical copper lights. The do-it-yourself menu features chicken, beef and veggie burgers and a choice of cheeses and toppings, including Sesame Ginger and Hainan Black Pepper.
