Cities and Regions

The longest continuous barrier reef in the Western Hemisphere borders the coast of Belize, making the waters here outstanding for snorkeling and diving. Inland, the Maya Mountains are swathed in thick rainforests with thousands of streams and rivers cascading down. Just offshore, dozens of islands, called cayes, make for great day trips.

Belize City
The country’s only city exudes a degree of raffish, weather-beaten colonial charm and serves as a departure point for trips to the cayes and the interior.
The Cayes
This barrier reef (pronounced "keys") shelters countless palm-studded islands, from Ambergris Caye with its boutique resorts and guesthouses, to tiny single-cabana islets, awash in an unbelievably clear sea.
The Interior
The country’s interior is comprised of eco-lodge- and exotic-wildlife-filled rainforests, important Mayan ruins like Xuntanuich, and cool, upland areas like Mountain Pine Ridge.
The Coast
Low-lying and dotted by small Creole and Garifuna (Black Carib) settlements, the best beaches and inns center around Placencia, Hopkins, and Dangriga in the south.
