Bora Bora: Regions

Bora Bora is so small that the entire island is circled by a single road. On the western side lies Vaitape, the only town. With the exception of the occasional hiking expedition to the peaks and foothills of the interior or a 4x4 Jeep Safari to historic WWII sites, most of the action takes place either in the town, along the coast, or on the surrounding islets.

Vaitape Vaitape is Bora Bora’s commercial center.  The small village has some tourist shops and snack bars.

Matira Beach Luxurious hotels (and some shops) can be found at Matira Beach, the island’s most beautiful (and only public) beach.

Motus (islets) Roughly twenty small motus or islets, reachable by boat, ring the main island. Some of them host exclusive hotels and shops.

The interior Tropical vegetation conceals ancient Polynesian temples (maraes), traditional villages, and rusty WWII cannons (leftovers from Bora Bora’s days as an American stronghold). The volcanic peaks of Mounts Otemanu and Pahia are best seen from Povai Bay.
