Bora Bora: Things To Do

Bora Bora is a honeymooners’ paradise and most travelers are content to soak up the scenery, gaze into their loved one’s eyes, and recuperate from the wedding. Should you need a break from such marital bliss, however, the island offers a wide range of activities ranging from shopping to water sports to hiking. Although children are welcome (and enjoy swimming with sharks and sting rays) the overall pace might be a bit slow for them.

Experience the Lagoon Emerald-green mountains rise out of crystalline waters that range from pale turquoise to sapphire.  A sunset cruise aboard the Taravana, champagne in hand, is the height of romance. Alternatively, dedicate a day to fishing, snorkeling, or simply sailing on the calm waters. Taravana Charters, Uturoa; 011-689-65-61-01; www.boraboraisland.com/taravana/charters/index.html#sunset

Go underwater Bora Bora is known for spectacular shallow, deep, and pass diving.  Witness 500 species of fish and, from July to October, the humpback whale migration. Non-divers can take an “Aqua Safari,” where a helmet linked to an oxygen tank allows you to walk with the fishes for an hour (www.aquasafaribora.com). Nothing Be it sitting on the private deck of your over-water bungalow or lounging on the beach, staring at the impossibly turquoise water is one of the best things you can do in Bora Bora (with your clothes on). Bora Bora

Renew your vows You can celebrate your union with a traditional Tahitian wedding ceremony at many resorts.  A  Tahitian priest officiates and Polynesian dancers dance – just remember that it’s not legally binding. The new InterContinental Bora Bora Resort and Thalasso Spa has an over-water wedding chapel. InterContinental Bora Bora Resort and Thalasso Spa, Motu Pita Au; 011-689-60-76-00; www.ichotels.com

Take a hike While there are many simple scenic walks, the strenuous hike up the volcanic peak of Mount Pahia rewards hikers with breathtaking panoramas of the island and the sea.  The trek takes two hours each way and is best done with a guide. Otemanu Tours; 011-689-67-70-49
