Sherman's Expert Review

Located on trendy Newbury Street, the Newbury Guest House (which underwent a complete renovation in spring 2009) puts guests right smack in the middle of the action with outdoor cafes, restaurants, and eclectic boutiques just steps away. Occupying three adjacent, historic, red-brick and brownstone Victorianmore row houses, the converted B&B retains much of its original detail in the form of decorative fireplaces, ceiling moldings, and parquet and hardwood floors. A full breakfast buffet is included in the rate, served in the breakfast parlor, or on warmer days, on the lovely patio. Although each of the 32 rooms has its own personality, they all include tasteful Federal-style furnishings. The largest rooms have expansive bay window alcoves with seating areas, while midsize rooms offer bright, airy quarters with oversized windows. Sleigh or four-poster beds are in both, as are loveseats, desk areas, and full baths. All rooms emanate a historic feel, without skimping on modern amenities, like cable TV, phones with voicemail, and free WiFi. For those who enjoy people-watching, grab a room facing Newbury Street, with its steady flow of hip passersby; those that prefer peace-and-quiet should opt for the quieter rear rooms.

Tons of construction going on last year when I visited the Newbury Guest House. The NGH is small but has about 10 or so rooms. The rooms themselves are small. They are quaint and have an old fashion, Victorian charm to them... I think my Nana has... more

I've never stayed here, but it sure does seem to have a lot going for it. Location, mainly, and relatively reasonable prices to boot.

"Location and more"

Newbury Street is a great location -- you can walk to so many shops, restaurants, and historic sites. The renovation (nearly over) did not interfere with a very enjoyable stay. The staff were most helpful. The room was quite adequate and easy to... more

I loved this place.  I stayed in October 2008, no noise, no construction.  We had a room in the front and did not find the street at all noisy, and the room was much nicer than I expected for $195.  We ended up with a stow-away guest (a third... more

"Good Enough & recommended at current price mark"

As one of the earlier reviews states they have recently refurbished this place, out with the victoriana and in with the modern minimalist sytle. Okay if that's your thing however at time of booking (Feb 09) we were not told and our original aim was... more

"Not what I expected"

Many years ago, while in Boston, I visited the Newbury Guest House and since then, I had been looking forward to staying there. However

"Excellent value in the heart of Boston's Back Bay"

My husband and I wanted to stay in a reasonably priced hotel that was close to major attractions in Boston. The Newbury Guest House fit the bill perfectly and was an amazing value. The hotel is located in the heart of Newbury Street's shops and... more

Drills and hammers and saws, oh my! Drills and hammers and saws, oh my! Drills and hammers and saws,OH MY! Toto, it's 8:45am on a Saturday! And we asked if there was going to be construction and they said not on weekends! Run,toto, run!

"Newbury Guest House - The Good and the no so good"

We recently returned from a weekend stay at this interesting hotel. It had been chosen by others with us who had stayed there previously. For location and price, you can't beat the place. In the middle of great shopping and close to other areas of... more
