Brazil Cities and Regions

Cities and Regions

Brazil is huge – in terms of size, it ranks behind only Russia, Canada, China, and the United States. It’s no surprise, then, that Brazil is spread across three time zones, contains a spectacular variety of geographical landscapes, features a pair or major cities, and generally dominates the South American continent.

North
Cruise down a jungle river in the sprawling but sparsely populated Amazon Basin to catch a glimpse of pumas, howler monkeys, and manatees in their natural habitat. See our Amazon Travel Guide
Northeast
Sample African-influenced cuisine, revel in the lively local music scene, and soak up the sun on the unspoiled tropical beaches of Bahia, lined with colonial towns established by Portuguese settlers.
Central West
Explore the geographical contrast where the rainforest and savanna meet dusty high plains and rugged red mountains; further south, the expansive Pantanal wetlands are a haven for bird watchers.
South
Marvel at Iguazu Falls, experience gaucho culture, catch a boat to the popular Santa Catarina island, and wander through European-style villages in the subtropical southern region. See our Iguazu Falls Travel Guide
Southeast
Hit the city streets (and the legendary beaches) in the country’s most populous area and economic center. The busy, prosperous Southeast encompasses Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, and Belo Horizonte.
Rio de Janeiro
Take in the panoramic views from Corcovado, stare at the beautiful people on the beach at Ipanema, and join in the energetic nightlife in the Cidade Maravilhosa (Marvelous City). See our Rio de Janeiro Travel Guide
São Paulo
Dive into the urban fray of art, commerce, and crime in Brazil’s answer to New York. Gorgeous old architecture and contemporary skyscrapers form the cityscape in this buzzing world capital. See our São Paulo Travel Guide
Buzios
Armação de Búzios (its official name) was an isolated fishing village when Bardot fled there to avoid the paparazzi in Rio de Janeiro. Her visit sparked tourism development that transformed the town into the St. Tropez of South America. See our Buzios Travel Guide
