Bucks County Editor Picks

Human beings were designed to commune with nature, and when the urge tugs, there’s always Bucks County, especially if you live in nearby cities like Philadelphia, New York City, and Washington D.C. Setting foot in this woodsy region is enough to draw a sigh of relief, but chances are that you’re more looking to make the most of your time away. Here, we direct you to the county’s best – the kind of strawberry-picking, river-tubing, cornbread-eating activities that make your escape from urban life that much more “Mark Twain,” and, consequently, that much more memorable.

Secluded on over 100 acres of prime pasture and woodlands at the end of a narrow, tree-lined stone road, the Barley Sheaf Estate is a sprawling colonial farmstead dating back to 1740. The estate, which has a total of 16 guest suites, includes the original manor house, a graceful 19th-century barn, and a quaint cottage. In true Pennsylvania country tradition, all rooms are furnished with antique décor such as wooden furniture and four-poster beds. Attentive details such as a complimentary wine and cheese reception every day from 4-6pm, brunch in the conservatory, a miniature horse farm, and a decadent private service spa with a junior Olympic-sized pool make these fields of barley worth crowing about.

Upon first glance, it’s hard to believe the Golden Plough Inn is a replica of an 18th century country inn, rather than the real thing. Nestled into the heart of Peddler’s Village, the property’s 71 rooms and suites effortlessly blend no frills, colonial elegance with the expected modern amenities of a boutique hotel like WiFi and a state of the art fitness center. Cherry and oak-stained furniture are common throughout and folk art paintings from local artists decorate the public areas. Upgrade to a deluxe room for a private gas fireplace, garden balcony, and a twin-sized whirlpool. In addition to the elegant accommodations, a delightful continental breakfast, and a complimentary evening champagne toast, guests will be delighted by the Golden Plough’s proximity to the acres of meticulous gardens and quaint shops of Peddler’s Village.
