Although English is increasingly spoken (especially by the younger generation), it’s a good idea to brush up on your German, which is also widely spoken. Excepting the requisite koszonom (thank you), Hungarian is notoriously difficult to master.
Affordable Opera
Budapest’s opera is still a bargain by international standards, and while the singers may not be superstars, the orchestra sounds great and the glorious neo-Renaissance venue is top-notch.
Transportation Savvy
Before you ride the bus, check the “travel conditions” section of Budapest’s public transportation website. Although construction of the new M4 subway line (scheduled for completion in 2010) isn’t impacting subway traffic, it may affect above-ground service.
Bathing Suit
Even if you’re going in the dead of winter, you’ll want your swimsuit when you decide to experience the baths of Budapest.
Money Access
Hungary’s official currency is the forent. Withdraw cash from ATM machines throughout Budapest. Credit cards are widely accepted – look for the card’s logo in the window (in a pinch, they can also be used to withdraw cash at post offices).
