Although Búzios is small – the permanent population numbers only 20,000 – the town does contain a few clearly defined areas for shopping and nightlife. The beaches also cater to specific crowds: singles, yuppies, teenagers, couples, hippies, surfers, and nudists. During summer holidays the population swells between 50,000 and 150,000.

The central commercial district is contained mostly on two streets – the cobblestone Rua das Pedras with its high-end fashion boutiques, restaurants, bars, and street vendors and the adjacent Orla Bardot.

This 2.5-mile long strand is Búzios’ biggest beach. Young surfers and celebrities begin partying in the afternoon to electronic music. The sand – as flat and hard as the abs - is great for running and soccer.

An active crowd flocks to Ferradura for water skiing, windsurfing, snorkeling, and wakeboarding. Thanks to the expensive beach houses that line its shores, it’s nicknamed “the Beverly Hills of Búzios.”

The Emergências Nature Reserve is home to abundant plant and animal life, including the endangered Golden Lion Tamarin; the Serra is a modest coastal mountain range.

This hard-to-reach enclave has become a de facto nude beach, popular with straight couples and gay men. There are no kiosks or roaming vendors, so bring whatever you’ll need.

Tartaruga Beach is packed with beautiful people and, at one end, happening kiosks. Natural rock pools offer bathing without the waves, and there are coral reefs for scuba divers.

Well-to-do Argentineans dominate the landscape at Buzios' most upscale beach. Kiosks serve the customary caipirinhas, beer, and fried squid, plus Chilean and Argentinean wine. Calm waters are good for kayaking and snorkeling.
