Cairo Neighborhoods

Islamic Cairo North
Home to Khan al-Khalili, one of the Middle East’s oldest markets, this neighborhood is also full of 11th-century minarets and mosques. Musts include the Qalaun and al-Musafirkhana complexes.
Islamic Cairo South
Less touristy than its northern counterpart, this area is rich with sites like the Al-Azhar Mosque and University (the world’s oldest college) and the Museum of Islamic Arts.
Coptic Cairo
This is where the roots of Christian Cairo lie. Visitors will find 11th-century convents and churches, as well as the Coptic Museum, which holds the world’s largest collection of Coptic artwork.
Downtown Cairo
Best navigated on foot, this traffic-heavy neighborhood is defined by movie halls, antique shops, budget hotels, bars, and the Egyptian Antiquities Museum.
Giza
Actually a suburb of Cairo, Giza is home to the Great Pyramids – arguably one of the world’s most famous sites.
Zamalek
A handful of restaurants, hotels and swanky stores are scattered throughout this quiet, upscale residential neighborhood.
