Cairo Tips

Tips

Cairo is a foreign destination. Here are some things you should know.

Don’t drive
Not only are Cairo drivers aggressive, they also don’t really follow traffic rules. Parking is also challenge, so unless you’re feeling bold it’s better to opt for taxis, which are readily available.
Fares upfront
To avoid being taken advantage of, agree on cab fare before you hop in a taxi. A trip from one end of town to another shouldn’t cost more than $6, and shorter rides are just a few American dollars.
Comfortably conservative
Cairo residents tend to dress conservatively, especially during the day. So unless you’re comfortable with stares from locals, women should avoid revealing outfits like mid-riffs and miniskirts. Men tend to wear pants, though shorts are acceptable.
Street eats
Avoid street cart food – although the hot roasted nuts, freshly cut fruit, and kebabs may look tempting, poor hygiene standards could lead to an upset stomach.
Private tour
Even fans of do-it-yourself touring would do well to hire a guide since Cairo is vast and its historic sites can be difficult to navigate alone. Most hotels offer private guides for as little as $40 a day.
Security checks
Although Cairo is perfectly safe, past threats and terrorist attacks have led every hotel, historic spot, and some shopping areas to install metal detectors and security checks. Allot extra time for these procedures during peak periods.
