Cape May Nightlife

Tucked into the old boiler room of the Congress Hall hotel, this nightclub looks like a throwback to Manhattan circa 1990. But the local jazz, blues, and reggae bands are good, the revelers are friendly, and if you want to dance, this is the place.

Mugs hang from the ceiling at this friendly tavern, which has been serving brews since 1926. On the last Sunday in August, members of the Ugly Mug club compete to see who can blow the most foam from their frothy glasses and thus earn the title of “United States National Froth Blowing Champion.”

The dramatic ocean view and the understated elegance of Martini Beach’s bar and restaurant, have long made this establishment a favorite after-hours hangout of the local gay crowd, but travelers of all sexual orientations will enjoy the vibe here. Visit at the right time of month to see the full moon light up the ocean. The adjoining lounge has live music – and a disco ball.

This ocean-side sports bar is a fun place to have a few beers once the families have gone back to their hotels (kids 4 and under eat free, so it’s best to wait until after bedtime, if you’re not fond of little ones); the pool tables, wireless internet and live bands liven up Cape May’s quiet nightlife scene. For a more sophisticated experience, try Martini Beach, upstairs.

The chocolate walls of the well-named Brown Room, right off the Congress Hall lobby, make this a relaxing place to have a drink after dinner. On summer nights and off-season weekends, enjoy your cocktail with live music. The friendly crowd makes it a good place to meet other hotel guests and travelers.
