Renting a car is a must, but do it well outside of New York City. Taking a train upstate and picking up your wheels in White Plains or Albany can save you hundreds.
Avoid Woodstock’s overpriced shops
Just about everything in Woodstock looks cute and has a hefty price tag, including clothing, art, and even a cup of coffee. For better bargains, seek out the shops in adjacent towns.
Book ahead early and get off the beaten path
When you travel to the Catskills you’re competing against multitudes of New Yorkers for a room, a table, or a peaceful segment of the nature trail. Weekending can be an arduous and crowded task unless you plan well in advance. Consider venturing off the beaten path as well.
