Chile’s seasons are opposite those of the northern hemisphere and, with its varying climates and terrain, the weather varies greatly from north to south and from the coast to the interior.
Peak Season: December to February
Chileans are on summer vacation and northern hemisphere travelers are seeking refuge from winter. Although weather can be unpredictable, expect daytime desert temperatures in the 90s (nights are cooler); 80s in Santiago; and 60s in Patagonia. Book ahead.
Off Season: June to August
Skiers, book ahead as resorts are packed. Other travelers, however, will find lower rates and fewer crowds. The north stays mild (with average highs in the 70s) while the 30s and 40s are the norm in the south. Santiago averages around 50 degrees.
Sweet Spot: September to November; March to May
Pleasant temperatures and lighter tourist crowds, with the exception of Semana Santa (the week before Easter), make spring and fall ideal times to embark on the lake district and central regions.
