A big, white, gleaming property overlooking the harbor – it’s no surprise to find that the Island was designed by Kim Utzon, whose father Jørn designed the Sydney Opera House. The hotel has one disadvantage: It’s located outside the city center. However, it’s only one-stop on the metro train or a short cab right to the heart of the town. In its favor, the weekend rates are excellent, but don't even think of taking the cheaper city-view rooms. The water views are glorious and in the summer you can watch Danes diving into the water from the floating lido outside the hotel. Bedrooms are compact, but use lots of glass, chrome and white paint to enhance their sense of space. They also have a genius touch: motion detectors at ankle height that turn on floor-level lighting if you get out of bed in the middle of the night.
