Cusco Neighborhoods

Plaza de Armas
Enveloped by balconied shops, bars, and restaurants, with a massive colonial fountain at its core, Cusco’s energetic main square (known simply as The Plaza) is the epicenter of tourist activity. Numerous tour companies operate from here as well.
San Blas
Hike the paths surrounding Plaza de Armas to hit this bohemian enclave, home of artists, craftsmen, and Cusco’s most jaw-dropping panoramic views, with dozens of intimate eateries and hotels for those seeking a reprieve from the Plaza de Arma’s all-night antics.
Plaza de las Nazarenas
In a quiet quarter near the San Blas district, encounter the Museo de Arte Precolumbino, formerly the mansion residence of the Earl of Cabrera; the Nazarenas Covent (now home to Hotel Monasterio), and Museo de Arte de Ninos Irq’I Yachay, where local childrens’ artwork is displayed.
Plaza San Francisco
Stroll amid overflowing market stalls and stumble upon the Museo y Convento de San Francisco, known for its ceiling frescoes, skull and bone decorations, and collection of Spanish colonial artworks, as well as historical churches Santa Clara and San Pedro.
Plaza Regocijo
A block from the Plaza de Armas, this garden square, originally the Inca cusipata (an area for dancing and festivities) is dominated by an attractive municipal building (look for the traditional Inca rainbow flag) and Casa Garcilaso, home of famed 16th-century mestizo poet Garcilaso de la Vega.
Zona Avenida Sol/Koricancha Complex
Beginning along Avenida Sol, head southeast away from the Plaza de Armas to the Inca sun temple at Korikancha (intersection of Ave. Sol and Calle Santo Domingo), the Huanchac train station, and the city’s biggest artisan market.
