It’s worth the 4-hour drive south from New Delhi to this city, where Shah Jahan built the white marble Taj Mahal for his wife, Mumtaz, as an eternal symbol of their love. While there, also check out the Agra Fort, an extensive brick fortress and palace, which was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983.

Between Delhi and Agra, this city served as the capital of the Mughal Empire during Emperor Akbar’s reign. An expansive complex of buildings, made of red sandstone and marble, this site serves as a model of early urban planning and architecture to this day.

This small city in the Aravalli hills is the site of the 25-acre Neemrana Fort and Palace, built in 1464 and now an exquisite hotel.
