Delhi Tips

Skip the rickshaw
New Delhi’s gotten a bad rap for its scheming and scamming rickshaw drivers. Avoid the fuss and hire your very own car and driver. Most hotels can arrange a vehicle with a day’s notice.
Call a cab
Should you find yourself in a bind, dial “1629” and a taxi will arrive within half an hour. Most hotels will be able to call a pre-negotiated taxi to the lobby as well, but this comes at an additional charge.
Haggle hard
As everywhere else in the country, foreign travelers should bargain at street stalls and markets, going down to at least half the asking price.
Hotel shops
Don’t be fooled into thinking that hotel gift shops might be a better bet than street stalls. These stores markup prices drastically, knowing that foreign travelers, will be likely to pay the asking price.
Bring a jacket
New Delhi’s climate is temperate during the winter months (November to March), with temperatures falling drastically once the sun sets. Be prepared by layering or by bring a light sweater or jacket.
