Be aware that many establishments close during the slow summer period when the threat of hurricanes scare away both visitors and locals alike. Before making plans, always call ahead between June and September to make sure that establishments are open.
English-ish
While English is the official language, you still might have some trouble understanding thanks to the heavy accent. Antillean Creole and bits of French and Dutch are common to hear. Some residents even speak Kokoy.
Montezuma who?
Dominica is known for its many clean freshwater rivers – some of which even supply bottled drinking water to residents via the Loubiere Spring and Morne Trois Pitons Spring labels (it is, of course, equally safe to drink straight from the source).
Yo ho ho
Pirates of the Caribbean 2 & 3 were shot on Dominica. Rent either one to prepare you for your trip or to see if you can spot any specific locations upon your return.
No Visas Necessary
Visitors from North America and the UK need only a valid passport to enter Dominica.
Roseau’s Literary Great
Jean Rhys, Dominica’s most famous writer, penned what is arguably one of the greatest novels in the English language, the Wide Sargasso Sea, written as a prequel to Jane Eyre.
National Day
On November 3 residents celebrate the discovery of Dominica by Christopher Columbus in 1493 (his second voyage) with traditional dance, music, song, and storytelling.
